Recently read novels....

The holidays are a great time to relax, curl up in a snowstorm and open a good book. Luckily I got to do all three this past December. Some of my most recent reads are as follows....

1. The Hunger Games and its sequel Catching Fire by Suzanne Collins. If you like YA literature these are the two best books to come out recently. They are fast paced, well written and AWESOME!

2. Graceling and Fire by Kristen Cashore. Again, YA literature but more fantasy based than the above two. Fire is a loosely based sequel or "companion" and only has one recurring character from Gracling. I loved Graceling so much that I found it hard to get into Fire but once I did (around page 150) I think I loved it more.

3. The Sweetness at the Bottom of the Pie by Alan Bradley. This book was as delicious as it sounds. It is a murder mystery set in 1950's England with an 11 year old girl who is obsessed with chemistry as its main character. She is incredibly morbid and would have got along well with Edward Gorey. I am on the edge of my seat for the sequel coming out this year.

4. The Gargoyle by Winnipeg author, Andrew Davidson. To be honest, if I hadn't been stuck on a 5 hour flight from Halifax to Calgary I might not have finished this. The book flashes between the present and "fictional" (?) tales from the past. The present story line was not something that held my attention but the author's creativity with the medieval story lines was what kept me going. Overall, an "ENH" book.
